Understanding the Active Directory Configuration Partition

Let's first take a quick look at where the configuration data is stored in the Active Directory. Most of the Exchange configuration is stored in the Active Directory configuration partition. The configuration partition is a piece of the Active Directory database that is replicated to all domain controllers in the entire forest. This partition stores information about Active Directory partitions, configuration, sites, display specifiers, and more.

When the first Exchange server is installed into an Active Directory forest, new configuration data is stored in this partition. The Exchange-related information is stored in the CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange container. Figure 8.1 shows the container as seen in the Windows 2003 support tool ADSIEdit.

You can also use the Exchange management tools to organize and present the information you see in Figure 8.1, but in a friendlier and more manageable format. It is unusual to actually edit the information in the Active Directory configuration partition, but it is useful to know where the configuration data is located.
