Chapter 4: Geronimos J2EE 1.4 Components

Overview

Your first encounter with a J2EE-compatible server (like Geronimo) may be daunting. After all, the J2EE 1.4 specification refers to no less than half a dozen of other specifications in mandating the features that must be provided in every compatible server. Geronimo is indeed feature rich. Much of this stems from the rich feature set of the components that are included as part of Geronimo. This chapter demystifies Geronimo by examining the internal composition of Geronimo’s J2EE service component.

This chapter begins with a review of the tiered architecture of a J2EE server, drawing specific references to the services offered by Geronimo. It presents the services and features available at each of the tiers and shows the software components that may be deployed on that tier.

This is followed by a brief discussion of client-side support provided by Geronimo. It introduces the Client Application Container, a feature that facilitates the creation and deployment of J2EE clients.

Another important area covered in this chapter is container services. These are services provided by Geronimo for hosted software components (such as security and transactions). The software modules and components you deploy to Geronimo will be able to make use of these container-wide services. In later chapters, you will discover how to configure the parameters for the container services.

By the end of this chapter, you will be familiar with the composition of the Geronimo server from a J2EE perspective. You will find out the types of J2EE software modules that can be deployed to a Geronimo server. You will also have an appreciation for the configuration customization that can be made when deploying Geronimo applications.
