The brief requires something oriental in character and the most obvious thing that comes to mind is the pentatonic scale E G A B D. However, the guitar is only playing two notes and it would be nice to keep things simple. So let's drop the G and A. That leaves E B and D with which to build another ostinato. A light texture is required. How about pizzicato strings? Violins are not oriental instruments as such, but when plucked strings are used they provide that kind of flavor.
Follow these steps:
Record the pizzicato strings (Figures 8.4 and P8.5). Minimalism, as we know, is about repetition. We also know that variation is needed to stimulate interest so we are now going to duplicate the sequence just recorded and then work on each resulting sequence individually.
Repeat the pizzicato strings (bars 3 5) five times as far as bar 15 [Functions > Objects > Repeat Objects... (x5)].
Now here's what we are going to do. Each part will keep its rhythmic structure but the notes will be changed according to a few simple rules:
The first sequence (bars 1 3) remains unaltered. We'll refer to this as the 'Original Sequence.'
The second sequence (bars 3 5) begins on the second note of the Original Sequence.
The third sequence (bars 5 7) begins on the third note of the Original Sequence.
Repeat the process on the remaining sequences until we have a 12 bar ostinato, named 'Cycle 1' in the Marker (Figure P8.6).
Save Song compare with project8/8.2.
