Summary

3 4

In this chapter, you've learned the basics of SQL Server networking and how to configure SQL Server on the network. You've seen the layering system that SQL Server uses, from the API to the net-library to the network protocol and finally to the network hardware. Each of these layers is independent, but they all fit together in various configurations. You have a great deal of flexibility in your choice of APIs, net-libraries, protocols, and even hardware solutions. And remember to periodically check network traffic to avoid performance problems before they start. We'll discuss common performance problems in Chapter 36. In Chapter 12, we will switch topics: you'll learn how to configure SQL Server 2000 with Microsoft Cluster Services to develop a high-availability system.
