Using Windows 2000 Service Control Manager

3 4

You can also start and stop SQL Server services using Windows 2000 Service Control Manager, either locally or remotely. You can even configure the SQL Server services to start automatically each time your system is started. To automatically start the SQL Server services from Windows 2000 Service Control Manager, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then choose Services to start Service Control Manager, as shown in Figure 8-3.
  2. Scroll down through the Service list box to find Distributed Transaction Coordinator, Microsoft Search, MSSQLSERVER or SQLSERVERAGENT. Right-click the service for which you want to configure the startup option, and then choose Properties from the shortcut menu to display the Properties window, as shown in Figure 8-4.

click to view at full size.

  3. In the Startup Type drop-down list, select Automatic, Manual, or Disabled. Selecting Automatic will cause the service to start automatically each time you start your system. Selecting Manual will require you to manually start up the service when you want to use it. Selecting Disable will prevent that service from starting—either automatically or manually. Click OK to save your configuration.
  4. There are three other tabs in the Properties window. The Log On tab allows you to specify the account that the selected service should log on as. The Recovery tab allows you to set options that should occur in case the selected service fails. The Dependencies tab shows you which services the selected service depends on and which services depend on the selected service, if any. For example, the SQL Server Agent service depends on the SQL Server service. The SQL Server Agent service cannot start if the SQL Server service is stopped.
