Chapter 23

The introduction of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 on the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system platform makes publishing SQL Server databases on the Internet easier. The combination of Windows 2000 and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 5 provides an extensive array of components and interfaces that can be used to connect to and interact with your SQL Server 2000 databases. This chapter introduces you to the basic concepts of accessing Microsoft SQL Server from the Internet using a variety of methods. Since this book is not a development book, this chapter is designed to provide an overview of the various access methods. Many good books on the market can give you the programming details.

This chapter begins by describing Internet programming concepts and the default Internet programming interfaces available with Windows 2000. You will be introduced to the basics of ODBC programming and ADO. You will also be introduced to ISAPI and ASPs as methods of accessing SQL Server. Finally you will be introduced to XML, what it is and how to use it. This chapter covers many topics but should help you understand basic tools for programming for the Internet.
