This chapter explains the fundamentals of transactions and transaction locking. In this chapter, you'll learn what a transaction is, what properties Microsoft SQL Server 2000 requires for valid transactions, how transaction modes are used to specify the beginning and the end of a transaction, and how to commit and roll back transactions. We'll also look at the types and modes of locking that SQL Server uses when performing transactions and at the concepts of blocking and deadlocking.
