The incidence of extraadrenal medullary tissue is very high compared to the incidence of extraadrenal cortical tissue, and while functioning extraadrenal medullary tissue occurs in about 1 in 8 cases of medullary hyperfunction, it occurs in fewer than 1 in 1000 cases of adrenocortical hyperfunction.
