Recipe 19.2. Restoring from Backup

Problem

You want to restore files that were previously backed up with Microsoft Backup.

Solution

Files created by Microsoft Backup have the .bkf extension. To restore from a backup file, you can either double-click on a .bkf file or launch Microsoft Backup from Start All Programs Accessories System Tools Backup:

  1. In the Backup or Restore wizard, select the "Restore files and settings" option and click Next.

  2. Click on the Browse... button to locate the backup file to restore. Select the items to restore by checking the items in the tree. Click Next.

  3. Click on the Advanced button to specify additional restore options.

  4. You have three options to restore the files: to their original location; to an alternate location that you specify; or to a single location that you specify.

  5. In the event that Microsoft Backup encounters existing files in the process of restoring the files, you have three options: leave them, replace them with newer files, or replace them. Click Next.

  6. Finally, there are three advanced options you can choose to take advantage of: restoring the original security settings of each file and folder; restoring junction points, but not the folders and file data they reference (useful for restoring mounted drives); and preserving existing volume mount points, if you're restoring data to an entire drive or partition. Click Next.

  7. Click Finish.

Discussions

Even though Microsoft Backup can back up and restore data on FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS volumes, if you have backed-up data from an NTFS volume it is recommended that you restore the data to an NTFS volume. Or else you could lose data as well as some file and folder structures.

The command-line NTBackup utility cannot restore files. You must use the GUI to restore files from a backup set.
