We have covered a number of new features in Oracle Database 10g. This chapter covers some miscellaneous new features in Oracle Database 10g, including the following:
Calling remote stored procedures
Workspace Manager enhancements
SQL*Plus enhancements
New features in the SQL language
Oracle Database 10g, through Heterogeneous Services, can (within a number of limitations) call remote stored procedures on non-Oracle remote systems. This functionality is, of course, limited by the remote system's support for this feature. Remote sites are not likely to support such things as SQL statements with connect by clauses, use of ROWID, and other Oracle-specific functionality.
Workspace Manager was introduced in Oracle9i Database and is improved in Oracle Database 10g. Workspace Manager allows you to version your tables, enabling you to create different data sets within the same logical object. Workspace Manager allows you to make a set of changes in isolation and then make them available to other users at a later time. Oracle Database 10g offers new functionality for Workspace Manger, including the following, each of which is discussed in turn in the following sections:
New functionality in the dbms_wm package
Multiparent workspaces
Workspace Manager events
Exporting, importing, and loading versioned data
Workspace continuous refresh
Other miscellaneous features
