Education and Experience Requirements

There are two categories for initial eligibility requirements. The following table is a breakdown of each category, which is based on information from the Project Management Institute (PMI) Web site (www.pmi.org).

The application process can easily be done online at the PMI Web site, which reduces the amount of approval time for the application.


Education

Project Management Experience

Educational Contact Hours

College degree (Category One)

Minimum of 4,500 hours of project management experience within the five project management process groups, with at least 3 years of experience within the 6-year period prior to the application.

35 hours of project management related educational contact hours. These hours can be accumulated throughout your lifetime.

High school diploma or equivalent secondary school credential (Category Two)

Minimum of 7,500 hours of project management experience within the five project management process groups with at least 5 years of project management experience within the 8-year period prior to the application.

35 hours of project management related educational contact hours. These hours can be accumulated throughout your lifetime.

Category One: Bachelor's Degree Candidates

If you feel you fit the requirements set out for a Category One candidate, you must fill out the Experience Verification forms to indicate the following:

  • Baccalaureate or global equivalent university degree completion.

  • A minimum of 4,500 hours of documented project management experience within the five Project Management process groups, including Initiation, Planning, Execution, Control, and Closeout.

  • For the 4,500 hours of experience, the candidate must have at least 36 nonoverlapping months of experience within the 6-year period prior to the application.

  • The candidate must obtain at least 35 contact hours of Project Management education. This includes seminars, workshops, classes, and any classroom instruction that includes content on project quality, scope, time, cost, human resources, communications, risk, procurement, and integration management. There is no time limitation to this requirement, but the candidate must be able to document when this requirement was fulfilled. Required supporting documentation includes educational background information, Experience Verification forms, and Project Management educational contact hours.

Category Two: Non Bachelor's Degree Candidates

If you meet the requirements for a Category Two candidate, you must fill out the Experience Verification forms to indicate the following:

  • High school diploma or secondary school credential completion.

  • Minimum of 7,500 hours of documented project management experience within the five Project Management process groups, including Initiation, Planning, Execution, Control, and Closeout.

  • For the 7,500 hours of experience, the candidate must have at least 60 nonoverlapping months of experience within the 8-year period prior to the application.

  • The candidate must obtain at least 35 contact hours of Project Management education. This includes seminars, workshops, classes, and any classroom instruction that includes content on project quality, scope, time, cost, human resources, communications, risk, procurement, and integration management. There is no time limitation to this requirement, but the candidate must be able to document when this requirement was fulfilled. Required supporting documentation includes educational background information, Experience Verification forms, and Project Management educational contact hours.
