FINDING AN ADDRESS

One thing you may have noticed earlier is that the title of the Address List screen was unusual. Instead of saying something descriptive like Address Book, its title is Find. This is because the Find feature is always active and the title of the screen is used to display the search criteria you enter. Initially, there is no search criterion and as a result all of the addresses in your Address Book are shown.

When you type a character, that character is added to the search criteria and is displayed in the screen title. So pressing the letter J causes the title to be updated to show Find: J (see Figure 10.7). This also reduces the Address list to only those Address Book entries that match the search criteria. Typing additional characters adds them to the title in the same way and also further reduces the Address list based on the new criteria.

Figure 10.7. Entering search criteria.

The Find feature of the Address list attempts to match the search criteria to the First Name, Last Name, and Company fields separately. If a value in any of these fields begins with the search criteria, it will be shown in the Address list.

After the search criteria has been entered, there are two ways to return to the full Address Book list. The first is to use the Backspace key to erase the characters in the search criteria one at a time. The other way is to press the Escape key. This will cause the search criteria to be removed completely.
