THE RECENT CALL LIST

The Phone application is sort of a merger between the Address Book and the Messages list. In fact, I think it is more correctly called the Recent Call list because it lists all of the numbers from placed or received calls, with the most recent calls being at the top of the list (this behavior can be changed in a configuration setting, however). Figure 9.1 shows this screen.

Figure 9.1. The Recent Call list keeps your most recent communications at your fingertips.

This list isn't the same as the Call Logs in the Message list. Only one occurrence of a phone number exists in the list at any time. If the number is not at the top of the list, placing a call to or receiving a call from that number moves it to the top of the list. In this way, the people you communicate the most with are always at the top of the list and easiest to find.

tip

You can bring up the One Time Dial dialog by pressing the Space key on the Home screen or the Recent Call list screen as well.

Devices with version 4.0 of the handheld software do not have a [One Time Dial] entry. Instead there is an edit field above the Recent Call list where you can enter the number to call. Figure 9.3 shows an example of this.

The Recent Call list also integrates with the Address Book as well. If a number matches an entry in the Address Book, that name of that entry shows up in the list instead of just the number. If the Address Book entry contains more than one number, for instance a work and a cell number, the source is also displayed in the list. Placing a call to or receiving a call from either source (in this case work or cell numbers) causes the entry in the Recent Call list to be moved to the top.

ONE TIME DIAL

Like the Address Book, the Recent Call list also contains a special entry called [One Time Dial] that is always at the top of the list. The [One Time Dial] is just like [Use Once], which we saw while composing a message using the Address Book, but behaves just a little differently. Selecting the [One Time Dial] entry and clicking the trackwheel produces a dialog where you can enter the number to use, as shown in Figure 9.2.

Placing a call with this dialog still causes the entry to be added to or moved in the Recent Calls List.

PLACING A CALL FROM THE RECENT CALL LIST

Selecting an item other than [One Time Dial] and clicking the trackwheel displays a menu with many menu items for initiating a message, in much the same way that the Address Book does. Even though this is probably not the preferred screen to use, you can use it to create email, PIN, and SMS messages to people who have entries in your Address Book.

However, unlike the Address Book, this menu shows an item for each phone field in the Address Book entry. If there is only one, it simply says Call Name. If for instance both the Work and Home fields have numbers, the menu items Call Home and Call Work would be shown. The method that was last used to place a call to a contact is set as the default menu item. For instance, if you last called a person at their work number, the Call Work menu item will be defaulted.

USING SPEED DIAL

Version 4.0 of the handheld software adds a speed dial feature. The speed dial feature allows you to map a specific phone number to a key on the keypad. Later, when you want to call that number, all you have to do is press and hold that key and the call will be created to the specified number. The speed dial keys can be used while on the Home screen, Message List screen, and the Recent Call List screen.

VIEWING THE SPEED DIAL LIST

To see the list of keys available for speed dial mappings, click the View Speed Dial List menu item from the Recent Call List screen. The Speed Dial Numbers screen, shown in Figure 9.4, will be shown. The number and actual keys available will be different, depending on the model of handheld you have. On 7100 series handhelds, only the numbers 19 can have speed dial entries. On all other handheld models, the keys AZ can have speed dial entries.

Figure 9.4. You can map phone numbers to keys on the keypad that will be used to activate a Speed Dial.

The mapping for each key is shown next to a graphic depicting the key in the list. If the number is part of the Address Book, the name and an indicator of which number it is (home, work, or mobile) is shown as well.

ADDING A SPEED DIAL

You can add a number to the speed dial mapping by clicking the Add Speed Dial menu item while the Speed Dial List screen is open and an empty speed dial entry is selected. Doing this will display the Address Book, from which you can select the contact and number to add.

When you add a number as a speed dial mapping, the Recent Call List changes to reflect the mapping. A small graphic of the key that the number is mapped to is shown on the far right side of the entry in the Recent Call List. This helps to serve as a reminder that the number is a speed dial number.

You can also add a speed dial mapping by selecting the number from the Recent Call List and clicking the Add Speed Dial menu item. This will add the number to the first available entry in the Speed Dial List, but will also start a move so that you can move it to the letter you want.

CHANGING THE SPEED DIAL MAPPING

If you have a speed dial mapping set up, but want to move it to another key, you can do so by selecting the speed dial mapping from the Speed Dial List screen and clicking the Move menu item. Scrolling the trackwheel up or down moves the entry to the next or previous empty entry. Click the trackwheel to select the key and end the move.

REMOVING A SPEED DIAL

Speed dial entries can be removed from the Speed Dial List screen by selecting the entry and clicking the Remove menu item. You can also remove a speed dial mapping by selecting the number with the mapping from the Recent Call List and clicking the Remove Speed Dial menu item.

ACCESSING VOICEMAIL

If you have voicemail service on your calling plan, your carrier should have configured the voicemail access number for you. If so, you can call your voicemail access number by selecting an entry other than One Time Dial and clicking the Call Voicemail menu item. You can also dial your own phone number, and this should connect you to your voicemail access number.

DELETING CALLS FROM THE RECENT CALL LIST

As I've said before, all calls are added to the Recent Call list and moved to the top each time they are used. It might be that you do not want a call to show up in the list for some reason. If so, you can delete a call by scrolling to it in the list and selecting the Delete menu item or pressing the Backspace key. You can also select several calls at once by pressing the Shift key while scrolling and then delete them all with the Delete menu item or Backspace key.
