14.6 Summary
Based on the assumptions we made to compare IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Informix UDB and Oracle 8i, it is clear that on a performance and cost level IBM's DB2 is the best choice. Of course, this is subject to interpretation. If you are not concerned with memory use on your system or do not care about configuring your system, then Microsoft SQL Server can be very appealing, since you can plug and play and be ready to go with it. Using IBM's DB2 requires more administration before the performance shown in this chapter is achieved. Ultimately, it depends on what one plans to do with the database that becomes the decision factor.
