Getting Help

Never fearhelp is always near in Dreamweaver. More often than not, when you need additional information about a panel or dialog, Dreamweaver's help system will take you right to the information you want automatically. You can gather context-sensitive help in the following ways:

  • Select Help > Using Dreamweaver or press F1 while working in Design view.

  • Choose Help from the Options menu or context menu.

  • Select the Help button if it's available in the current dialog box.

  • You can access assistance with code-specific issues from the Reference panel (as discussed earlier in this chapter) by choosing Help > Reference or pressing the F1 keyboard shortcut while working in Code view.

Should you require the ColdFusionspecific help documentation, which includes a complete CFML reference (as does the Reference panel), select Help > Using ColdFusion or press Control-F1 (Command-F1).

Choosing Help > Using CF MX7 Extension to read help documentation regarding all of the new functionality the CFMX7 Extensions you installed bring to Dreamweaver.

When viewing the Using Dreamweaver or Using ColdFusion help system, you will notice several categories available for selection:

  • Contents. The Contents section presents you with all the major topics and subtopics, just as in a printed manual. As you click each topic or subtopic, the area on the right updates to show the corresponding information.

  • Index. As in most manuals, the Index section makes available an alphabetical listing of keywords and phrases. Type a keyword and press Enter (Return), or select one from the list and then choose the Display button to view the results on the right.

  • Search. The search facility is a very quick way to find help. First type a keyword or phrase, then choose List Topics to obtain the results of your search term. Choose the result you wish to see, then select the Display button to view the information on the right.

    TIP

To narrow your search, use a phrase enclosed in quotations, as in "Tag inspector"this will return results for the exact phrase only, instead of all the results for the words Tag and inspector.

  • Favorites. Once you have found helpful material that you might need to view again later, you can store the page in your list of favorites to save time. You can place the currently listed topic in your list of favorites by clicking the Add button. To view a favorite item, highlight it in the list and then choose Display. To remove the item permanently from your favorites, first highlight it in the list and then click the Remove button.
