Project Summary

The project presented a number of challenges during its life cycle. The most prominent was the introduction of new technologies, which obviously delayed the delivery date. As the client was not bound by any constraints such as a marketing or advertising campaign, it was possible to delay the end product so that TSC could use these technologies. In other projects, TSC has dealt with a number of constraints that directly affected the final delivery date.

The analyst and developers had a fairly steep learning curve in constructing the system with limited knowledge of the technologies that were to be used. Obviously their experience with previous versions of Flash and ColdFusion was an advantage. The steepest learning curve was obviously with the Flash Communication Server. However, the developers had been exposed to local shared objects while developing the original polling system, and once they used the FCS, that knowledge then assisted in their understanding of server-side shared objects.

As this was new technology, the developers were cutting their teeth on the concepts and how to implement the new technology. This system has been the product of research and determining a solution based on intuition rather than solely on experience. In future projects, TSC will be able to draw upon this project and the experience it has provided. As always, this system will be looked upon in the future as a primitive implementation of the new Macromedia MX suite. In reality, almost every developer has the same perception of the first application he or she has developed using a new technology.
