Construction Review

Since the design phase, TSC's approach to the project had changed to accommodate the Flash Communication Server. This new technology did not have much of an impact on the requirements or design document, as these were developed in a manner that did not rely on technology-specific functionality.

Creating a prototype of the product helped the developers to fully understand the system's strengths and weaknesses. The prototyping was done as soon as the required system could be identified. In theory, prototypes should be developed and then discarded before beginning construction of the production system. However, in reality this may not always be the case.

When providing solutions, a developer team must be aware of emerging technologies. With the introduction of new technologies becoming more frequent, a solution could be outdated before it is even implemented. TSC understands this and is very encouraging when it comes to releasing its developers into research and development.

A solution provider is only judged on the systems it has delivered. These systems can become out-of-date very quickly. To be competitive in this market place, a strategic plan that includes research and development is essential.

At this stage, Tatam System Consultants (TSC) had completed the construction of the chat system; however, the project was far from over. As illustrated in the project Gantt chart, the system was constructed in several parallel tasks. This scenario of concurrent tasks was used to reduce the overall time it took to develop the chat system. Though this method may have shortened the delivery date, it also could have created challenges when the components needed to be integrated into the overall system.

This chapter begins by discussing some aspects of the system assembly and functional testing. It continues with a code review and an account of the final testing of the completed system. Once the system had been reality-checked on the development platform, the client was contacted and a meeting was organized to precede the facilitation of end-user acceptance testing.
