Understanding Flash Remoting


Macromedia Flash is Macromedia's rich-client technology, used to build applications that run within a Flash player on PCs, PDAs, game consoles, interactive TVs, mobile devices, and more. Some of the benefits of Flash as a user-interface technology are:

  • Portability

  • Ready availability

  • Consistency of output

  • Extensive UI control

  • Light weight

Macromedia Flash is often used as a client-only technology, but in truth Flash is very capable at functioning as a client in a client/server world. Flash Remoting is a technology that allows a client's Flash to interact with server-side processing, so that data may be passed back and forth between Flash and

  • ColdFusion

  • Java

  • .NET

NOTE

Flash Remoting is a standard feature included with ColdFusion (and JRun), but must be purchases for other Java servers and for .NET.
