Instant messaging is a relatively new business communications tool, complete with risks, rules, regulations, and policies that senior executives may not be familiar with. Whereas some executives may have been early adopters of IM technology, others may mistakenly view it as a toy for teens, with no business applications whatsoever.
Don’t expect all your senior executives to know what IM is; to grasp the dangers inherent in it; to understand the importance of complying with IM rules and policies; or to appreciate why funding must be allocated for an IM system, for employee education, and for technology tools to manage and control IM use, content, records, and risks.
