The Web services concept has been gaining momentum in the past two years. Most major software companies have embraced the concept in one form or another. Some have even staked their future on it. Although the convergence toward a common understanding of what the term means has been slow, a clear definition of what Web services are is finally emerging. This is reminiscent of the early days of object-oriented programming (OOP); not until the concepts of inheritance, encapsulation, and polymorphism were well defined did OOP become accepted into the mainstream of development methodologies. This chapter defines Web services and provides an overview of the concepts, architectures, and standards that are involved. |
