Sun is the preeminent source for information about Java and J2EE. However, there are many Web sites that are helpful to developers a few of them connected with the development of the specifications and reference implementations are noted here:

  • Java 2 platform specifications The specifications for Java 2 platforms and technologies can be found at http://java.sun.com/products/.

  • Java Enterprise Blueprints The prescribed architecture for J2EE applications, best practices, and guidelines for using J2EE technologies are published in a book, Designing Enterprise Applications with the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition by Nicholas Kassem, et al. An online copy of the book, along with the source code for the reference applications is located at http://java.sun.com/j2ee/download.html#blueprints.

  • Java 2 Platform source code The source code for the standard edition of the Java 2 APIs is included in the distribution of the Java 2 Software Developers Kit. For the truly adventurous, the source code for the rest of the J2SE platform, along with the source for the J2EE platform and other Java technologies, can be found at http://www.sun.com/software/communitysource/.

  • Java Developer Connection Offering support for developers, the Java Developers Connection (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/) provides tutorials, examples, access to early versions of emerging specifications and products, and forums for discussion.

  • Open source implementations of Java specifications Working closely with Sun, the Apache organization implements Java specifications using an open source model. Several of their projects are used in Sun's official reference implementations. Tomcat (http://jakarta.apache.org/) is used in the servlet and JavaServer Pages reference implementation, and Crimson and Xalan (http://xml.apache.org/) are used in the reference implementation of JAXP.
