The Hiring Process

There are six essential steps in the hiring process. The process can take days, weeks, or even months, depending on how fast you can review the resumes, schedule the interviews, and make your final decision:

  1. Define the position Write a detailed job description and list of duties. Establish the salary range for the position.

  2. Post job listing Contact local newspapers or online websites to place a job vacancy ad. Your local Craig's List (www.craigslist.org) is great and free.

  3. Accept and review resumes Accept resumes either via email or by mail. Have a check off list of requirements to filter qualified applicants. Be prepared. Depending on your job market, you could receive more than 450 applications per week. In addition, there are rules regarding applications. You must keep all applications for a minimum of one year. Check with your local employee office.

  4. Schedule and interview candidates Call applicants to schedule an appointment for an in-office interview. You can also conduct a phone interview to further filter applicants.

  5. Screen applicants Perform background checks and verify references. Use a personal reference when hiringsomeone who can vouch for the potential employee. If you don't know whom you're hiring, get what's called a credit and criminal background check. You can do this through your county office administration or, even more easily, online. The cost is roughly $49, and the benefit is worth every dollar. You will need permission from applicants, so get them to sign a release/permission form that includes social security number and other information necessary to perform the check.

  6. Make an offer When you select the top candidate, you can either call or send the applicant an offer letter. List the proposed salary and benefits.
