Don't forget about Copy and Paste. In iMovie HD, you can copy clips in one project, and then paste them into another project to add them.
In general, I don't recommend that you empty the Trash while working on a project. Although iMovie HD improves on previous versions by enabling you to pull clips out of the Trash, you may throw something away that you need later. At that point, the only way to get it is to re-import the original footage from tape.
If you do need to grab clips out of the Trash, simply click the Trash icon or choose Show Trash from the File menu. Select the clip you need and drag it to the Shelf or the timeline; the window at right lets you preview the clip.

In earlier versions of iMovie, the Clip Viewer was the only mode of the timeline that allowed you to rearrange clips. However, now you can move them in the Timeline Viewer, too. You may not think that's a big deal, but it saves you some work and frustration by not having to switch between viewers just to slide a clip into a new location.
If you do move clips in the Time-line Viewer, it helps to drag them slightly up above the timeline before moving, to make sure you rearrange the clips, and not just create a blank space (see Chapter 6 for more on blank clips).
Although I've structured this book so that all the clips are added in this one stage of editing, you can drag clips in and out of the timeline at any time.
