Chapter 6. Capacity Planning Within Your Environment
In this chapter, we discussed the capacity planning requirements that need to be explored as we begin to plan your SharePoint Portal Server environment. We discussed how to determine the number of servers needed, and we compared and contrasted several scenarios, including single servers, multiple servers within the same site, and multiple servers distributed across multiple sites within the enterprise.
We discussed how to plan for required hardware, and we presented example calculations for small, medium, and large site installations. We provided a formula for determining your number of operations per second, and we discussed approximately how many users the various scenarios would accommodate. We talked about procedures for monitoring and managing performance using standard performance counters, and we provided a process for tuning servers according to the type of role the server will perform. Lastly, we provided sample metrics to help you understand what is considered acceptable performance, as well as discussed other special considerations that you should understand as you plan the capacity requirements for your organization.
