Chapter  6.   Capacity Planning Within Your Environment

If you are responsible for managing the SharePoint Portal Server site, the last thing you would want is an unhappy end user community. You have heard of the motto "no news is good news." Your goal should be to plan your deployment in such a way that you never hear complaints of unacceptable performance. To do this, you will need to be aware that when measuring the performance of a server, you will want to look at performance as it relates to the four categories in Table 6.5.

Table 6.5. Common Performance Management Indicators

Function

Description

Common Operations

Viewing the home page on the dashboard site, browsing folders and categories, retrieving documents, and performing a simple search.

Uncommon Operations

Uncommon operations include all other operations, such as check-in, check-out , publish, approve, and so on.

Long-running operations

Long-running operations include moving, copying, or deleting folders; deleting or renaming categories; and changing inherited security.

Rare Operations

Rare operations include creating document profiles, creating categories, and creating content sources.

Extensive testing has been done by Microsoft and other key SharePoint Portal Server partners . The general recommendation for acceptable performance is that common operations should not exceed 3 seconds. Uncommon or rare operations should not exceed 5 seconds and no single operation should have latency beyond 10 seconds. The only exception is long-running operations, which may take longer due to your specific environment. Setting a logical threshold according to these three recommendations will help to ensure users experience acceptable performance.

NOTE

It should be noted that although some operations are more costly to servers, common operations such as viewing the home page, performing a simple search, or browsing folders have minimal impact on throughput requirements. Microsoft recommends that most standard SharePoint Portal Server environments will use a profile that consists of 95% common operations and 5% uncommon operations. It is also recommended that you plan for an occasional rare or long-running operation.
