Chapter  6.   Capacity Planning Within Your Environment

Unlike the server, there is not an individual client application for SharePoint end users. The portal is exposed to end users as a dashboard site, and users access the site using a Web browser. End users can perform a majority of the portal search- related tasks using the Web browser. The client components are an extension of the Windows Explorer and Microsoft Office applications. We know that documents are stored within the workspace. Within the workspace, we have a collection of management folders, documents, content sources, and so on. Content that needs to be managed from the workspace using Windows Explorer requires installation of the client components on a computer running Windows 2000.

To learn more about installing client components, see "Installing the Client Components," p. 167.

Administrators can assign specific roles to end users, which specifies what functions the end users can perform within the workspace.

To learn more security roles, see "Permissions," p. 281.

Within the client based applications such as Office XP, end users can create documents and post them to the portal using integrated menu-based commands. Upon adding the client components, the next step is to add a Web folder as a pointer to the workspace. The Web pointer will be enabled as follows : http://Name-of-Server/ Name -of-Workspace.

Depending on whether you have Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 98, the process for adding a Web folder will be slightly different. If you are using Windows 98, within Web folders, in My Computer, click on Add Web Folder to set up the Web folder to the desired location. If you are using Windows 2000, go to Web folders in My Computer, then launch the Add Network Place Wizard to set up the Web folder to point to the desired workspace location.

To learn more about installing client component functionality, see "Installing the Client Components," p. 167.
