Chapter  2.   SharePoint Portal Server Features and Capabilities

The following sections provide a high-level overview of requirements for the client, the server, and the network. In addition, limitations are discussed.

System Requirements for Server

Each server running SharePoint Portal Server requires the following:

  • Processor ” Intel Pentium III “compatible.

  • RAM ” 256 megabytes (MB).

  • Disk space ” 550MB, formatted on a drive with NTFS file system.

  • Operating system ” Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later.

  • Additional Services ” Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service.

Network Requirements

  • Directory Services ” It is possible to install SharePoint Portal Server in a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 environment.

  • Network Protocol ” Requires Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

  • Proxy Changes ” A proxy server enhances performance as it caches Web pages and protects against unauthorized individuals from the Internet. SharePoint Portal Server uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) verbs, the Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) set of HTTP extensions, and a custom SharePoint Portal Server verb called INVOKE. You will need to make the appropriate changes to your proxy server to pass the required verbs. By default, SharePoint Portal Server uses the proxy server settings of the default content access account, taken from the current proxy server settings in Internet Explorer. Changes to the proxy settings for the SharePoint Portal Server computer do not affect other applications on the server. For example, you can configure the SharePoint Portal Server computer to use a specific proxy server without affecting Internet Explorer. HTTP is used by clients in an effort to communicate with the SharePoint Portal Server dashboard site. Improper configuration of proxy settings for Internet Explorer at the client may impact a user 's ability to interact with the SharePoint Portal Server dashboard site.

  • Firewall Requirements ” If your organization uses firewalls, plan where the firewalls and SharePoint Portal Server will be located. Since index propagation uses the standard Windows file sharing protocol, if you desire to take advantage of index propagation, ensure that you do not have a firewall between the server dedicated to indexing and the search server. If a firewall does exist between the index server and search server, you will need to make sure that Windows file share capabilities are allowed.

System Requirements for Clients

The system requirements for running the SharePoint Portal Server client components are described below:

  • Processor ” Intel Pentium-compatible 200 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor.

  • RAM ” 64 megabytes (MB).

  • Disk space ” 30MB on Windows 2000 systems; 50MB on all other systems.

  • Operating system ” Microsoft Windows 98; Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition; Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 with SP6A; or Windows 2000 Professional, Server, or Advanced Server.

    NOTE

To utilize the SharePoint Portal Server Coordinator security functions, you must have Windows 2000 Professional, Server, or Advanced Server installed.

  • Messaging client ” Microsoft Outlook Express 5.01 or later.

  • Office extensions ” SharePoint Portal Server Office extensions require Microsoft Office 2000 or later.

  • Web browser ” Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later with Visual Basic Scripting support.

TIP

SharePoint Portal Server Office extensions are installed by default when you install Microsoft Office 2000. If you are using previous versions of Microsoft Office, you will need to manually install the Office extensions to get the SharePoint Portal Server functionality through Windows.

Dashboard Site Requirements

End users do not have to install the client components to access the SharePoint Portal Server dashboard site. The site can be accessed using one of the following Web browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later.

  • Netscape Navigator 4.51 or later (for Italian and Spanish versions of SharePoint Portal Server).

  • Netscape Navigator 4.75 or later (for English, French, German, and Japanese versions of SharePoint Portal Server).

NOTE

The Macintosh and Solaris operating systems are not supported. You will also need to enable Microsoft JScript or Netscape JavaScript support within your browser for proper dashboard site functionality.

  • Microsoft Office Server Extensions

  • Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 and earlier

  • Exchange 2000 Server

  • Microsoft Site Server (all versions)
