Chapter 23.  Troubleshooting

While not wholly inclusive, we hope that this chapter has provided you with a sound approach to troubleshooting typical SharePoint Portal Server issues. To summarize, we recommend that a SharePoint Portal Server Administrator start by identifying and documenting the issue at hand, and then move into performing general troubleshooting, covering all of the most common issues/bases before escalating. Next , the Administrator should examine the various lists of known problems and issues, and then verify that the solution stack is indeed sound. The solution stack should, in particular, be viewed with a cautious eyeall changes to the solution stack should be completely documented and go through the proper change management processes. Finally, verifying that all of the various integration points are operating as expected, and that functional issues are addressed, is required.

Leverage your partners: Microsoft, your hardware partner or systems integrator, your SharePoint development partners , internal colleagues and so on. And leverage the many online toolsets and other applications available from these same folks.

Nearly as important as the approach we provided, we also anticipate that the various common and more puzzling issues covered herein will assist you in installing and supporting your SharePoint Portal Server system in the years ahead. For additional troubleshooting assistance outside the scope of this chapter, consult Microsoft's SharePoint Portal Server Administrator's Guide, the User's Guide, and the SharePoint Portal Server Resource Kit.
