Managing Backups
Managing your backups is a key component to the overall backup process. If they are not efficiently stored or not well taken care of, they may not be in good working order in the event that you might need to use them.
You may already have a tape backup storage and management system in place in your organization. It would be wise to utilize your backup management procedures if they exist. If not, when maintaining backups make sure you do the following:
Store in a secure place, preferably a different location than the server.
Keep older backups in case your recent backup is damaged, destroyed , lost, or was not successful without your knowledge.
Create a system for overwriting old backup tapes.
Utilize an expiration date to prevent overwriting prematurely.
Label backup media with date and SharePoint Portal Server name .
Now that you are knowledgeable about the ways in which SharePoint Portal Server handles backups, and you understand standard backup troubleshooting and management processes, you can begin to develop a backup strategy that best suits your infrastructure and environment.
TIP
It is important to document this information in your SharePoint Portal Server documentation.
