Part I, Overview

In Part I, the authoring team provides a high-level overview of SharePoint Portal Server features and benefits. This part consists of five chapters, each with a specific focus. Chapter 1 provides a high-level introduction to SharePoint. We do not attempt to start discussing how-to's in Chapter 1, as we want to provide a high-level conceptual overview. Chapter 2 discusses the core features and capabilities of SharePoint, and exposes the reader to a variety of key terms that will be discussed throughout the book. Again, we intentionally do not provide how-to steps in Chapter 2, as we drill into detailed walk-through steps later within each individual chapter. Chapters 3 through 5 discuss what we feel are the three core features of SharePoint Portal Server: using the workspace and dashboard, document management, and using indexing to allow efficient searches for your content. Our goal in Part I is to introduce the key concepts of SharePoint, while providing just enough detail to allow our readers to increasingly learn more about SharePoint as chapters progress in a linear fashion. Upon completion of Chapter 1, you will have a very good overview of SharePoint and its core features and capabilities. Reading this part first is important, as the following sections drill into more detail about the key concepts introduced in Part I.

Part II, Planning, Design, and Administration

In Part II, the authoring team commences to provide granular details about planning, design, and administration requirements. We discuss the requirements for capacity planning for small, medium, and large sites. We provide detailed instructions on how to install SharePoint, as well as common troubleshooting techniques to be aware of. Common administrative tasks are discussed for managing a server, managing the workspace, and managing folders. As we begin to discuss managing folders, we then need to clearly understand SharePoint security, and how security is integrated with Windows 2000 security. We then end the part with details on creating categories, processes, and procedures for backup, restore, and duplication.

Part III, Customizing SharePoint

Part III begins to explore advanced topics on how to customize SharePoint. Key authors with extensive development expertise teach the reader how to customize dashboards, as well as how to create Web Parts using ASP, COM+, SQL Server, and WebDAV. In addition, the authors share their expertise for how to customize SharePoint using XML and XLST.

Part IV, Planning and Managing Indexing

Part IV is dedicated to the key features of planning and managing indexing. We felt a dedicated part was necessary due to the importance of these topics. Detailed processes and procedures are articulated for how to configure SharePoint to crawl a variety of other content sources. Configuring content sources then becomes extremely important for how to set up and manage indexes.

Part V, Real World Scenarios

In this part, many of the concepts and detailed tasks come together to articulate a methodical approach to planning a real-world deployment. Detailed scenarios are provided for small and large sites.

Part VI, Troubleshooting

Part VI provides a detailed list of troubleshooting tips and techniques that are sorted in a logical manner. The format of this section allows the reader to drill down into a variety of troubleshooting threads according to problems they may be having at any given time of the SharePoint Portal Server lifecycle.
