Chapter 8.  Managing the Servers

From time to time, it may be necessary to start or stop services associated with SharePoint Portal Server. For example, as stated in the earlier section on Exchange Server, when you change the Exchange user account that SharePoint Portal Server uses to access an Exchange Server, you need to stop and restart the MSSearch service. To that end, we cautioned our readers, as simply stopping and restarting the services will have an impact on other applications or services if performed carelessly. We also noted that if you run SharePoint Portal Server along with Exchange Server on the same computer, stopping the MSSearch service during peak production hours will impact your Exchange operations, negatively impacting your end-user community.

The primary services commonly used by SharePoint Portal Server include

  • Internet Information Services Admin Service (IISADMIN)

  • Microsoft Search (MSSearch)

  • SharePoint Portal Server (Msdmserv)

  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store (MSExchangeIS)

NOTE

It is highly recommended that you clearly understand the impact of stopping and restarting services. Many services have dependencies on other services, and just when you think that you are simply stopping one service, you may be surprised to find out that other dependent services were also stopped , which may disrupt your production IT business operations. Be careful.

To stop and start a service on a SharePoint Portal Server, perform the following:

  1. From your taskbar, click on Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, and then Services.

  2. Right-click the service that you desire to stop and click OK.

  3. To restart, click Start.

To view service dependencies, perform the following:

  1. From your taskbar, click on Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, and then Services.

  2. Right-click the service that you want to check for dependent services, and click on Properties.

  3. Click on the Dependencies tab (see Figure 8.12).

It should be noted that it is possible to restart many services at once in Windows 2000. For example, restarting the IISAdmin service will also start other dependent services.
