Chapter 8.  Managing the Servers

SharePoint Portal Server allows you to specify the location of Data store and log files. This ability to modify the default location can substantially increase the overall SPS server performance and reduce the complexity associated with managing these files. Figure 8.8 provides a visual representation of the data and log files settings page, which is the page for changing the default location.

For detailed information regarding sizing and performance characterization of the SPS data store, log files, and more, see "Performance Requirements," p. 586.

Modifying Data Store, Log, and Property Store File Locations

Once you access the server data and log file settings page, there exist six data or log files that may be changed. The six components include

  • Search Indexes

  • Search Temporary Files

  • Search Gatherer Logs

  • Web Storage System (WSS)Database

  • Web Storage System (WSS)Streaming Database

  • Web Storage System (WSS)Database Log

These settings are described in more detail in Table 8.2:

Setting Type

Description

Search Indexes

This particular field is used to change the location of a search index. Workspace indexes as well as indexes that are propagated from other servers are stored in the directory specified within this field.

Search Temporary Files

During the crawl process, the Microsoft Search (MSSearch) component creates temporary files. The Search Temporary Files field is used to change the default location, which is normally WINNT\TEMP on the system drive. However, in the absence of a WINNT\TEMP folder, the folder indicated within the system TEMP variable is used. It is recommended that this location point to a disk separate from the disk that contains SharePoint Portal Server system data or index files.

Search Gatherer Logs

The Search Gatherer Logs field is used to change the default location of search gatherer logs. Gatherer log files contain important information regarding URLs that are accessed during the creation of an index for a content source. Examples of the types of data contained in these log files include access errors, successful accesses, and accesses that are denied using rules based index restrictions. These log files are generated for the workspace each time an index is created, and can be viewed by accessing the Content Sources folder, which is a subfolder of the Management Workspace.

Web Storage System (WSS)Database

This field is used to change the path of the Web Storage System database. This database, also known as the public store, contains all workspaces for this server, and every SharePoint Portal Server has only one. This Web Storage System Database file is called wss.mdb.

Web Storage System (WSS)Streaming Database

This field is used to change the path for the Web Storage System Streaming Database. The Web Storage System (wss.mdb) and the Web Storage System Streaming Database (wss.stm) are two separate physical files that are combined to comprise the actual database. Quite often, the mss.stm file is larger than the wss.mdb file due to the type of data that resides within this file.

Web Storage System (WSS)Database Log

This field is used to specify or change the location of Web storage system database logs. The file location can be changed to separate partitions. However, the log file should be located on the same computer as the Web Storage System.

CAUTION

It is extremely important to note that when you change the path to Search Indexes, Search Temporary Files, and Search Gatherer Logs, the files are not automatically redirected to the new location. Once the new location is specified, SharePoint Portal Server will begin to create indexes in the new location from this point forward. If you want to move existing indexes to the new location, please refer to the process as documented in the file called Toolshowto.txt, which is located on the \Support\Tools directory of the SharePoint Portal Server CD.

TIP

Only the WSS database, the WSS streaming database, and the WSS database logs are automatically redirected after file locations are modified. If you also happen to have Exchange 2000 loaded on the same computer, you should use the Exchange System Manager to modify the location of the files that comprise the Web Storage System.

If you do not have Exchange 2000 loaded on the same computer, you can perform the following steps to change the location of the data store and log files:

  1. Right-click on the server object within SharePoint Portal Server Administration.

  2. Click Properties and then click the Data property page.

  3. Click on the file that you want to change the default location of, and click Browse.

  4. Within the Browse for Folder dialog box, specify a location, and click on OK and then Apply.

TIP

A root folder cannot be specified as the desired redirection location, and if you do not have enough available disk space for the file you are redirecting, you will get an error message.

Specifying settings and viewing gatherer log files are covered in more detail in "Viewing the Gatherer Log," p. 480.
