Case 2: DataLink Corporation
Overview

DataLink Corporation is a large multinational company specializing in payroll administration, payroll tax filing, and human resources administration. DataLink has offices in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. DataLink is in a growth mode and is currently researching office locations in Russia.

Current LAN/Network

DataLink has 100Mbps connectivity within all LAN locations. Headquarters is in New York City. There are regional offices in Miami, Atlanta, San Diego, Cleveland, Quebec, Hong Kong, and Lisbon. The company is currently using NT 4.0 domain controllers.

Client computers include NT workstations, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP Professional. Some clients obtain an IP address automatically, whereas others have static addresses. Many salespeople use laptops to access resources from the field.

Current Domain and Management Infrastructure

DataLink currently has a separate domain for each location. All locations in the United States are managed by the same IT team. Locations outside the U.S. have their own IT management team at each location.

Current WAN Connectivity

Headquarters has a full T-1 link to all offices with the exception of the Hong Kong office, which has only an ISDN BRI link. Due to the nature of its business, DataLink transfers large files on a frequent basis and therefore requires the most available bandwidth possible. Primary and secondary DNS zones are used for fault tolerance. Zone transfer is not currently encrypted or secured.

Proposed LAN/Network

DataLink would like to upgrade all domain controllers to Windows Server 2003. The company's main goals are the following:

  • Reduce administrative overhead where possible

  • Eliminate nonsecure DNS zone transfer

  • Establish and enforce group policies for all clients

  • Provide secure remote access for sales team

  • All clients should obtain addresses automatically

  • All clients should register their own A (host) records

  • All Active Directory replication should be scheduled

Directory Design Commentary

CIO: I'm not sure we need to have as many domains as we do now. I would like to examine consolidating some domains into others where possible.

CEO: We need to maintain complete autonomy in the Hong Kong office. It should be totally separate from the other offices.

CFO: Long-distance charges are through the roof because the sales team uses dial-up connections to headquarters every day. I would like to reduce these charges.
