Access 97 made publishing Microsoft Access data to the Web possible for the first time, but its Web Publishing Wizard wasn’t easy to use, because it depended on HTML Layout Control to position controls on the page. Access 2000 introduced data access pages , which allow you to put Access data on Web pages with both display and editing capabilities. Data access pages combine the features of a form and a report, so you can use them to view, analyze, and enter data, even if you don’t need to publish data to the Web. You can also use data access pages to display data in bands (similar to a grouped report) with options to suppress details if you want a summary view of the data.
For example, you might show customer information in the top-level band, with orders in another band, and order details in a third and lowest band. Depending on which bands are expanded, you could see just customers, customers and their orders, or customers, orders and order details. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at a data access page first, and then we’ll discuss how to create a data access page and place Office Web Component controls on it.
