Summary

Data management will continue to be a challenging task for the foreseeable future. This chapter discussed four different perspectives on data management: managing data for point-in-time recovery using snapshot technology, managing historical versions of files using backup and snapshot technology, managing storage to comply with government regulations using WORM, and CAS technology and managing capacity with SRM.

ILM was discussed at the close of the chapter as an important area for IT organizations to develop. This is a big topic that the industry is just starting to understand. While some vendors are claiming to have ILM products, it seems more likely that organizations will end up building this capability piece by piece and platform by platform.
