Adding and Removing Information in the Registry

You can add information to the Registry to customize many Microsoft programs. You might want to add a value to the Registry to add a new entry type for a journal entry. Or you might need to add the Security key to the Registry to cause Outlook to check the Exchange Server for security settings related to programmatic access and attachment blocking. Before you add information to the Registry, however, make sure that you know the format and location of the information you are adding.

To add a subkey to the Registry, use the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the key where you want to add a subkey.

  2. Select the key in the left pane of the Registry Editor.

  3. Select the Edit menu, and navigate to New, Key. The key is added with a temporary name.

  4. Rename the key and press the Enter key.

To delete a subkey, select the subkey and press the Delete key. You'll need to confirm that you want to delete the subkey. Before deleting any subkey, export that subkey so that you can restore it if necessary. When you export the subkey, it will be saved as a .reg file on your hard drive.
