Advanced Options with Outlook and Exchange Server

When you use Outlook 2003 as a client for Exchange Server, you can take advantage of some of Exchange 2000's advanced features for sending, receiving, and sharing mail. When sending email, you can take advantage of distribution lists stored on Exchange Server, as well as delegate access to others' mailboxes. With the appropriate permissions, you can send messages on behalf of another user or even send messages as another user.

The features in this chapter all work with Exchange 2000 server. They should all work, very much as described here, with Exchange Server 2003, formerly codenamed Titanium. Although these features will also work with Exchange 5.5, the steps used to access these features might be slightly different.

NOTE

Most of the features in this chapter rely on you giving others permission to access your mail folders or email accounts. Before you allow anyone to access your inbox or send messages as you or on your behalf, make sure that you understand the risks of such behavior. For example, you probably don't want to give everyone in your company Send As permission on your mailbox. However, giving your assistant Send As permission might be a desirable action.
