Moving Attachments

When I attach a file to an email, the file sometimes appears within the email itself. Other times, the file appears at the top of the email in the header. Still other times, the file appears at the bottom of the email. Why does this happen?

Where your attachment appears in the message is completely dependent on your message format. Composing a message in plain text places your attachment in the message header, directly below the To, Cc, Bcc, and Subject fields. Attaching a file to a rich text message inserts the message attachment icon directly within your message text. Using HTML format also places your attachment at the top of the message in the message header. Previous versions of Outlook displayed attachments to HTML messages below the message in their own separate box.

Disappearing Attachments

My recipients are complaining that the files I send to them never get there. I've checked my Sent Items folder and the attachments are there. Why aren't my recipients receiving them?

The first option to check when recipients aren't receiving attachments is your message format. If you're sending your messages in rich text format, and those messages are being sent over the Internet, there's a good chance that your attachments won't be received. Non-Outlook clients cannot understand rich text formatting information. Recipients will receive a file named Winmail.dat rather than your intended attachment. The easiest resolution to this problem is to change your default message format to HTML or plain text, or at least change the message format when you need to send an attachment to a non-Exchange user.

I Can't Vote

I'm trying to send voting buttons to a group of people for approval of a new company vacation policy. My recipients aren't seeing the voting buttons when they open their email messages.

To use voting buttons, you must either be in an Exchange environment or use rich text format to send your emails. If you're sending emails to non-Outlook clients, voting buttons simply will not work. If you're sending emails to other Outlook users over the Internet, voting buttons should work if you send your email in rich text format. If you're sending emails within an Exchange organization, you should be able to send voting buttons in either HTML or rich text format.
