What Are Notes?

Outlook's Notes, like the sticky notes they resemble, are useful for storing small pieces of text (see Figure 16.1). You can add contacts or categories to your Notes and locate the Note quickly using Find. Because URLs in Notes are clickable, you can paste a URL in a Note and include comments about the site. Outlook saves Notes automatically, so as soon as you move focus away from the Note, you never have to remember to save it.

Notes can replace paper notes, but they lack most of the functionality you might expect to find in onscreen sticky notes. That's not to say they aren't useful. They just don't have many features, including those many people expect electronic sticky notes to offer, such as the ability to format text and insert the current time and date.

Outlook's Notes are useful for storing small snippets of information, such as usernames and passwords for Internet sites, along with clickable URLs or registration information for software. Any information you need to keep for a long time works well in Outlook's Notes, and because they're stored in the message store, they are easily backed up with your email.
