Everything Is Connected

Everything in this world is connected. Everyone is connected. It is valuable to nurture connections that seek continuous improvement with strong ethical values. Not every connection is worth nurturing. There are negative, potentially harmful relationships. That is why you must constantly evaluate your relationships. Ask yourself, is this someone I want to be around? Is this someone who is uplifting, inspiring, or fun? Professionally, is this someone I want to work with? You have to make choices. The bottom line is that you want to form strong bonds with people you like, trust, and respect. You want these bonds to be strong enough to withstand the ups and downs of life, to be there when you need them most.

And most important, you must be willing to do the same—to be there for people who need you, especially when they are going through difficulties. You don't have to solve everyone else's problems. You might just need to offer a shoulder to cry on, or a few words of encouragement. You never know what small gesture might be the greatest gift. As baseball legend Jackie Robinson once said, "A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives."

How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people.

—Albert Einstein
