5 Steps for Developing Foresight

  1. Understand the importance of foresight as a tool for creating a better life. Of course, you can't always keep everything under control. Life happens. Storms batter us around. But if you have plotted a course, you can rely on your inner compass to help you reach the shore once again. Otherwise, you might drift at sea, lost and confused. I remember great words of wisdom given by a mother to her children. She told them to nest in the gale. A gale is a strong wind of speeds up to 60 miles per hour. You need to be able to hold steady against such a force. There are birds that pick up mud and dirt in their mouths and mix it with saliva to create a glue to hold their nests together. The structure of these nests enables them to withstand great winds. Foresight—your strong vision of the future—is the nest you create to help you survive when hard times hit. The stronger that vision is, the greater the shelter your nest will provide.

Every great work, every big accomplishment, has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision, even though just before the big achievement, comes apparent failure and discouragement.

  2. Create a detailed picture in your mind. Define your goal clearly. Visualization is a mental exercise; it's a muscle that can be strengthened with constant use. Don't be afraid to add to the picture or reconfigure it. The clearer and brighter you can make the picture, the easier it is for you to be pulled toward it.

  3. Do your research. Foresight is not based on conjecture. It does not come out of thin air. Foresight comes from gaining knowledge of what has happened in the past and what is important today. That is the only way to gain insight into how to plan for tomorrow. Keep this phrase in mind: People and print. If you're planning ahead in business, for example, find out as much as you can about the industry in which you're interested. Talk to people in the industry. Read books and trade magazines. Surf the Internet. Look for resources that will give you a broader, deeper understanding of your profession. Once you have this knowledge, you can look ahead with confidence. Your foresight becomes stronger when it is cultivated with the richness of your environment.

  4. Don't wait to plan ahead. There is no special time or place that needs to be set aside for developing foresight. It may help to set aside a quiet time and place to just think, but it's not necessary. Visualization can take place at any time, especially when you're doing "mindless" tasks—when you're stuffing envelopes, doing housework, washing the dishes, listening to music, or traveling from one place to another.

  5. Write down your thoughts, ideas, and plans—anything that pertains to your vision. Keep a notepad with you at all times so that you can jot down ideas as they occur to you. We all know that the best ideas come when we least expect them. We also know how easily they slip away if we don't give them enough respect and attention.

Each eye can have its vision separately; but when we are looking at anything, our vision, which in itself is divided, joins up and unites in order to give itself as a whole to the object that is put before it.
