Word Processing Functionality in OneNote

Microsoft Word is a robust word processing program. With it, you can check spelling and grammar, as well as add bullets and numbering, WordArt, tables, borders, and shading. Figure 11.1 shows several paragraphs formatted with some of these word processing features.

In addition to the shading shown in Figure 11.1, there are several words and phrases underlined in wavy lines. Microsoft Word underlines potential misspelled words in red. In the figure, the word follwing is misspelled. In addition, Word doesn't recognize the spelling of Majorka, Felis, or sylvestris.

Microsoft Word does more than simply check for spelling; it also checks for grammar. The underlined sentence that starts with The European with a broad head is actually a sentence fragment. Word underlines the entire sentence in green to show you there's something wrong with the sentence syntax.

OneNote has some of the same editing features as Microsoft Word, but is definitely not as robust as Word. Figure 11.2 shows the same text from Figure 11.1 as seen in Microsoft OneNote.

As you can see from the figure, OneNote doesn't have as many editing features as Word. For example, you can highlight text in OneNote, but you can't apply shading like you can in Word. You can't create borders around text or even insert a formatted table.

OneNote does include a spell-checker. OneNote will highlight possible misspellings in the same way as Microsoft Word, by underlining the potential misspelling in red. In addition, OneNote doesn't check for grammar, so the fragmented sentence isn't caught in OneNote.
