Working with Your Side Note

Once you've launched the Side Note window using any of the methods mentioned in the section "What Is a Side Note?", you can perform a variety of tasks within that window.

Extending Your Side Note

As you're typing along taking notes, you might eventually run out of room. Generally, Side Notes are used for short, quick notes, but your phone call might run long, or you just might need more space to continue your note. To add additional space to your Side Note, click the Extend Side Note icon next to the horizontal scroll bar, as previously shown in Figure 8.2. This icon will give you an additional amount of space. The exact amount varies, but it's often around the same size as your existing Side Note.

Creating New Side Notes

If you want to create a new Side Note page from the Side Note window, just click the New Page icon (the first icon on the Side Note toolbar). You'll get a new, untitled page in your Side Note window. Once you add a new page, there are only three ways you can return to the previous Side Note page you were viewing. You can delete the new page by clicking the Delete icon on the Side Note toolbar, you can use the previous page button on the bottom right of the OneNote window, or you can maximize the Side Note window and choose your previous page from the page tabs, as explained later in this chapter.

Inserting Note Flags in a Side Note

Just like full-sized notes you create in OneNote, you can add Note Flags to a Side Note as well. To add a Note Flag to a line in a Side Note, Click the note container that has the line you want to flag. You can also highlight the individual line within the note container.

If you want to apply a Note Flag to the highlighted text, click the fifth icon on the Side Note toolbar. The icon will change based on the last Note Flag you used within OneNote. If the last Note Flag you used was Remember for Later, the icon will be a pushpin.

If you want to apply a different Note Flag to the highlighted text, click the drop-down arrow next to the Note Flag icon to display Figure 8.6.

Choose the Note Flag you need from the drop-down list. If you accidentally apply the wrong Note Flag, you can remove it in two ways. You can select the Note Flag again to toggle it off, or you can select Remove Note Flags from Selection.

If you choose Remove Note Flags from Selection, you can actually remove the Note Flags from the entire Side Note. Just select all text in the Side Note and choose this option.

Adding Audio to a Side Note

Much like other notes in OneNote, a Side Note can be used to store an audio recording along with typed or handwritten text. A typical use for recording audio and text in a Side Note is a telephone conversation or a quick meeting between two coworkers. To start recording audio in a Side Note, click the red record icon on the Side Note's toolbar. A notation is placed in your Side Note that an audio recording is present, as shown in Figure 8.7.

To stop recording audio, click the blue stop button on the Side Note's toolbar. If you're typing or writing while OneNote is recording audio, OneNote records what you're typing during each portion of the audio recording. You can open the main OneNote window, navigate to the Side Notes section, and play back your audio while OneNote highlights the portions of the note you were typing or writing during the audio recording.

Unlike full-sized notes, a Side Note does not have the capability to highlight the portions of a note you were typing or writing during an audio recording, when viewed in the small Side Note window. You need to view a Side Note in the main OneNote window for this functionality.
