Installing OneNote on Your Computer

Microsoft Office OneNote is available as a standalone product. To install OneNote on your computer, use the following steps.

  1. Close all open programs on your computer. Open programs can sometimes lock certain files and prevent them from updating properly.

  2. Insert the OneNote CD in your computer's CD or DVD drive. The CD should autoplay and display the Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Installation Wizard.

  3. Enter your 25 character product key for OneNote. You can find the product key on the back of OneNote's CD case or on the Certificate of Authenticity. When you've entered the product key, click Next to display Figure C.1.

Sometimes it's easy to mistake one character for another in a Microsoft Product Key. In particular, the letter B and the number 8 often look quite similar. If you receive a message about an invalid Product Key, double-check your key to make sure you haven't accidentally switched two characters.

  5. You must accept the End-User License Agreement (EULA) before installation can proceed. Check the box marked I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next to display Figure C.2.

  6. You can choose from three installation types or choose a custom installation. Choosing a Custom Install displays Figure C.3. The different installation types are

    • Typical Install The most commonly used OneNote components are installed. Some advanced components, such as certain stationery, are not installed. These components are either installed when first used (requiring the CD) or can be installed through the Add/Remove Programs function within Control Panel.

    • Complete Install All components of OneNote are installed. This option requires the most space on the hard drive but minimizes future requirements for the OneNote CD.

    • Minimal Install Only the minimum required components are installed. Templates, stationery, and other advanced features are not installed. This installation type is only recommended if you have very little free hard drive space.

    • Custom Install Selecting this option allows the user to choose which components are installed.

  7. A component with a dark gray icon, such as the Office Shared Features icon in Figure C.3, contains some components selected for installation and other components not selected for installation. To view subcomponents, click the plus sign next to the component name. To install a component, click the small down arrow next to the name of the component and select either Run from My Computer (installs the selected component only) or Run all from My Computer (installs the selected component and all subcomponents). You can prevent a component's installation by selecting Not Available. Click Next when you're done customizing your installation.

  8. On the next screen all you'll see is merely a confirmation screen. To install OneNote, click Install. You'll see an installation screen with a progress bar. This screen might display for several minutes while OneNote 2003 is installed.

  9. When the installation completes, a confirmation screen is displayed. You can select the check box to Check the Web for updates and additional downloads. While not required, this is often a good idea in case service packs or patches have been released for OneNote. When you're done, click Finish.

There's another installation option you can choose Install on First Use. Choosing this option installs the selected component the first time it's needed. While this can be a good way to save space, it does require you have the installation CD handy if you ever try to use a component that's not already installed.

You're now ready to begin using OneNote 2003!

When installing OneNote, you don't need to install the optional components such as Handwriting Fonts, Tours, or some Help components. You can also leave out some of the Office Shared Features such as Proofing Tools.
