Extending the Radar Lessons

Extending the Radar Lessons

Along with Web services, the mobile business technologies such as wireless infrastructure management, mobile commerce, location-based services, telematics, and electronic tagging are key disruptive technologies that should be on the radar of most enterprises. They can be applied across industry in a variety of scenarios for revenue generation, performance improvement, and cost reduction.

Wireless infrastructure management can help reduce costs of operation and to ensure the best possible return on investment from large-scale mobile enterprise initiatives. As more and more devices and applications are deployed to mobile workers, the enterprise needs to take more control in order to standardize the environment and to minimize support and maintenance costs.

M-commerce is becoming a reality almost under the radar. While consumers aren't quite buying retail products using their phones, they are starting to purchase enhancements for their phones via m-commerce transactions. Downloadable ring tones serve as one example.

Location-based services can be applied to pinpoint the location of people or assets for tracking purposes and emergency 911 services. They can also be applied for location-relevant consumer applications such as driving directions, weather forecasts, traffic reports, concierge services, electronic marketing, and electronic commerce applications.

The automobile could well be the second most significant convergence platform (the environment where information and entertainment can be delivered via a variety of digital services offerings) after the home for the general consumer, setting the stage for strong growth in telematics.

One of the most interesting emerging technologies in the field of electronic tagging is RFID tags. These tags have been in use for a considerable amount of time for a variety of applications such as access control, antitheft, and asset tracking, but are now moving more squarely into the mainstream due to advances in the technology, increased standardization, and lowered prices.
