Applying Text Attributes

 < Day Day Up >

Keep the tool you're using in mind as you work. For instance, say you have chosen the Pointer tool and selected a block of text. You decide to make the color of the text green, and click a green swatch in the Swatches panel. Instead of the text changing color, the background of the text block is filled with green. The same holds true with strokes. To affect the text, you must be in the Text tool, and the text must be selected.

If you have a text block on the page and you are currently using the Pointer tool, double-click the cursor inside the text block and the cursor turns into the Text tool. Set any text or make any necessary changes. When you move the cursor outside the text block, the cursor becomes the Pointer tool. Move it over the text block again, and it reverts to the Text tool. The only shortcoming to this feature is that if you want to make another text block, you must either press the T key, or select the Text tool from the toolbar again to draw the text block.

If you use the Pointer tool to select multiple text blocks, you can change some text attributes, such as font, size, leading, and whether it is roman, italics, or bold. Don't attempt to change fill color or stroke, though, or you'll be surprised as explained earlier. You can only select contiguous text in a single text block at any given time. If you linked text blocks, you technically have multiple text blocks, but FreeHand sees them as a single block of text and enables you to select contiguous text from one block to another.
