In this tutorial, you learn how to make the button (shown in the follow- ing figure) that you use in Chapter 20 of this book.


A gold button

Open a new file that is 200 × 50 with a white canvas. To make the button's main shape, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Rectangle tool in the Tools panel, and drag to draw a rectangle of any size.

  2. Select the rectangle, and type 110 in the Width field and 25 in the Height field of the Property inspector.

  3. Click the down arrow to access the Fill Options drop–down menu, and select Linear.

  4. Click the Fill color box in the Property inspector (or Tools panel) to access the Gradient editor.

  5. Click the left color swatch, highlight the current color's number, and type #D6C06A.

  6. Click the right color swatch, highlight the current color's number, and type #B08B00. If there are additional color swatches present, click and drag them downward to delete.

  7. Both opacity swatches should be set to 100%.

  8. In the Property inspector, drag the Texture slider to 50%. Alternatively, you can type the amount, but be sure to press Enter (Return) to accept the setting.

  9. Click the color box for a stroke in the Property inspector or Tools panel, and choose Pencil 1 pixel Hard with a color of Black.

To make a small rectangular shape for the button, follow these steps:

  1. Use the Rectangle tool to draw a small rectangle.

  2. Select the rectangle and type 21 for the width and height in the Property inspector.

  3. Click the Stroke color box and type #D6C06A . Use a tip size of 1.

  4. Click the Fill color box, and type #B08B00 for the color.

  5. Set the texture slider to 0%.

To draw a star, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Polygon drawing tool.

  2. In the Property inspector, select Star from the Shape pop–up menu.

  3. Change the sides to 5, and leave the angle at 38.

  4. Drag on the canvas to draw the star.

  5. Change the Height and Width properties to 16 in the Property inspector.

  6. Click the Stroke color box and type #D6C06A. Use a pencil stroke of 2 pixels.

  7. Click the Fill color box and type #B08B00.

Shift +click on the small rectangle and the star, and group them. Position the group on the right or left of your button. Be sure the black border of the main button shows. Use the keyboard arrow keys to help with precise placement.

Next, use the Line tool to add a 1–pixel black line to the side of the small rectangle that is facing the large part of the bigger rectangle.

To convert this graphic into a symbol, follow threse steps:

  1. Choose Select ® Select All.

    Caution 

    If you don't select all the objects, only the part that is selected will be converted to a symbol.

  2. Choose Modify ® Symbol ® Convert to Symbol.

  3. In the Symbol Properties dialog box, select Button as the type, and click OK.

  4. Save the file, and you're finished
