This chapter introduced you to the concept of the ColdFusion application, in which a series of templates are grouped together. You learned about the special file Application.cfm, and that when it is stored in the uppermost folder of a site, its contents are automatically inserted into every ColdFusion template lying within that folder structure. You also learned how to formally define an application within an Application.cfm file, and how doing so allows you to begin using session, client, and application variables. These unique variables allow your applications to share data from one template to another, to preserve variables for a specific length of time, or even to store variable data for use every time a specific user visits your application.
