Overview

If you're new to programming languages, it may be helpful to think of functions as mini-programs designed to undertake a variety of common tasks. ColdFusion MX supports literally hundreds of functions, and with each release of the software the list grows longer. As you learn in this chapter, ColdFusion includes functions that enable you to manipulate text strings or the contents of variables, to provide you with data about your variables, and to work with dynamic dates and times in your Web pages.

Note that the examples in this chapter are designed to get you comfortable with using functions. This chapter covers only 10 functions out of a library of over 200, so after you get your feet wet you'll want to turn to your ColdFusion MX documentation for a complete list of other functions and what they do.
