Overview

Adding audio and video files, Flash buttons, and scrolling text are nice ways to spice up your Web sites. Add a Java applet to create scrolling text. While sound and movie files do add quite a bit to your page's download time, giving your site's visitors access to multimedia can enrich and enliven their experience. With careful design and by providing optional links, the user can choose to view (or hear) your files — or not.

Flash buttons and text can be added to your pages right in Dreamweaver. These scalable, easy-to-use Flash elements make button building without using a graphics program possible. Adding Flash movies that can contain sounds, interactivity, and even connect to a database increases the value of your site. Dreamweaver MX makes it easy to insert a Java applet into your site as well. Java applets can provide amazing functionality that just isn't an option any other way.

Media objects require a browser to use plug-ins or helper applications — programs that are recognized automatically by the browser. In this chapter, you look at inserting media objects that require the use of plug-ins — Flash and QuickTime — as well as media presented through ActiveX and Java.
